Education Before Recommendation℠ is the guiding professional philosophy across our designations. It recognizes that no financial, retirement, benefit, or planning decision exists in isolation. A recommendation that appears appropriate when viewed through one area of expertise may create unintended consequences in another.

The professional must therefore look beyond the immediate question. Before making a recommendation, the professional should seek to understand the client’s complete circumstances, identify the systems and benefits that may intersect with the decision, recognize areas that require additional research or specialized expertise, and consider both the immediate and long-term consequences of the available choices.

Just as importantly, the client should be educated before being asked to decide. The goal is not simply to tell a client what to do, but to help the client understand why a course of action may be appropriate, what alternatives exist, what consequences may follow, and what questions may still need to be answered.

Education Before Recommendation℠ does not require one professional to know everything or practice outside the boundaries of their licensing, credentials, or expertise. In fact, the philosophy requires the opposite: recognizing when additional research is necessary and when the guidance of tax, legal, benefits, insurance, investment, or other qualified professionals should be obtained.

Understand first. Educate second. Recommend only after both have occurred.
